In a new eLetter feature, we will spotlight undergraduate brothers who are making a difference on campus and in their communities. Rising junior Brian Van der Schaaf is spending the summer interning at an engineering start-up in NYC. He is the Beta Pi Chapter's social chairman, and is active outside the fraternity as captain of the Penn Club Ultimate Frisbee B-team, a teaching assistant for introductory courses in the engineering school, and as a member of Engineers Without Borders.

Brian Van der Schaaf is a member of the Phi pledge class at Beta Pi. Originally from Westfield, NJ, Brian started his freshman year at Penn in the fall of 2012, went through recruitment as a freshman, and is now a rising junior. As a student in Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Brian started as a materials science major and over the last academic year enhanced his course load to include a double major in computer science.

Putting this new area of study to use, Brian is working at an engineering start-up firm, Simulmedia, Inc., in New York City this summer. His internship is specifically aimed at applying his study in computer science – he does programming, analyzes data, and creates predictive models to be used within the television advertisement industry.  Brian's previous work experience included working as a camp counselor at Echo Hill Camp for three summers, where he met and formed strong friendships with fellow Beta Pis, Nate Selzer and Jimmy Townsend.

During the school year Brian is a heavily involved member of his chapter where he has contributed in his capacity as social chair over the past semester and will continue to do so into the next academic year. During his first semester in the chapter he served as Vice President of the Phi pledge class, and after his term as social chair ends he plans to continue to seek positions of involvement and leadership within the house, with a potential bid for an e-board position in the upcoming fall semester elections. Outside of Beta Pi, Brian captain’s the Penn Club Ultimate Frisbee B-team, is a Teaching Assistant for introductory courses in the engineering school, and is a member of the organization Engineers Without Borders.
