Scott Mackler and Harvey MacklerExciting news on the scholarship front! The Joseph Alexander Foundation, Inc. has generously donated $100,000 to the PIKE Foundation to endow The Scott A. Mackler, MD, PhD, Medical School Memorial Scholarship.

This Scholarship is created to honor the legacy of Scott Mackler, MD, PhD (Pennsylvania, Beta Pi '77).  Scott was born in New Jersey and attended The University of Pennsylvania where he earned a B.S. in physical therapy, a B.A. in biology, a PhD in anatomy and his medical degree.

Before Amyotrophic Lateral Schlerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease) entered his life, Scott was a former Penn soccer player, an avid marathoner, a teacher and a caring physician.  As he progressively lost most of his physical abilities, he remained active with his mind and intellect-focused on being the consummate research scientist.

Scott was a loving husband and father.  His brother, Harvey Mackler (Pennsylvania, Beta Pi '72), often referred to Scott as a Timex watch and its slogan "takes a licking and he keeps on ticking."  Scott Mackler battled ALS for 15 years.  He passed away on November 13th, 2013.

The Scott A. Mackler, MD, PhD, Medical School Memorial Scholarship will annually award at least $3,000 to a member of Pi Kappa Alpha that is attending or has been accepted to an accredited U.S. medical school.  The first scholarship will be awarded in Spring 2016.
