The Philadelphia Inquirer has added Neil Vogel, Beta Pi ’89, to its board of directors. Brother Vogel is presently CEO of Dotdash (formerly About.com).

After being selected one of “The Coolest People in New York Tech This Year” by Business Insider in 2012, brother Vogel was made CEO of About.com in 2013. After restructuring the company, he took About.com and transitioned it into Dotdash. He then led it through a series of acquisitions that transformed Dotdash into the diverse and successful company it is now. In June 2020, Digiday (an online trade magazine for online media) named brother Vogel as “Executive of the Year."

We regret to report the passing of Chris Chimicles, son of Nick Chimicles, Beta Pi ’67. At the time of his death, Chris was CEO of Angeion Group, a company he helped found. Angeion Group is one of the national leaders in the area of class administration for class action law suits.

Our November 2017 eletter featured Chris when he co-founded USA250, an organization created to promote Philadelphia as a tourist attraction during the semiquincentennial anniversary celebration of the United States in 2026. More recently, he was appointed as Commissioner for America 250 PA, the Pennsylvania Commission for the Semiquincentennial.

We extend our sincere condolences to Nick and his family for their heartbreaking loss.

Paul Townsend, Beta Pi ’04, is presently a criminal defense attorney in New York City. After the N.Y.C. court system was shut down due to the COVID-19 virus, Paul decided to host a podcast on legal issues. Paul’s podcast is different from current existing legal podcasts in that Paul’s podcast will be directed to those not in the legal profession. Using layman’s language, Paul will comment on legal events that are extensively covered by the media. However, he intends to explain the cases from a different perspective than the media presents them. Paul will set forth the background facts as a judge or jury would have heard them. He will then detail the legal arguments of both sides, explain the legal strategies of the parties, comment on the effectiveness of such strategies, and attempt to show how all of the above led to the final verdict or case resolution.

The podcast is called In Summation-The Final Word and can be found here:

A personal message from John Joseph, Beta Pi ’80:

Please allow me to post this go fund me page. For those who recall our charity fundraising comedy night in 1982, the opener for Henny Youngman was a young comedian named Bob Rubberface Nelson. He was absolutely hilarious. Google his football bit on YouTube which he did that night at Irvine. Still hysterical. Anyway, he has just been diagnosed with colon cancer and is in a bad way. I remember him being a really nice guy who hung out with us at the house after the show. If you can give something, that would be really nice.

Mark Bodner, Beta Pi ’79, has scheduled a Zoom holiday happy hour on Thursday, December 17, 2020, from the hours of 6:00pm to 8:00pm. This is the third internet happy hour that Mark has scheduled. The two prior internet get-togethers were very successful. Besides Mark, 13 other Beta Pi brothers, with initiation dates ranging from 1977 to 1982, have already indicated their intention to attend.

This Zoom meeting is much needed as the annual dinner, sponsored by Jeff Kaufman, Beta Pi ’80, could not take place this year due to Covid-19 restrictions. In deference to brother Kaufman, it is suggested that everyone have steak for dinner on December 17, 2020, to prepare for a festive evening with the beverage of your choice.
